Summer days, driftin' away

AAAR@UIUC had a great start this summer with multiple activities throughout May and June.

On May 30, we had the first activity from our new 2023-24 executive board members. Our new president, Manho Park, facilitated a discussion on "Paintings by Turner and Monet depict trends in 19th century air pollution | PNAS " (Albright and Huybers, 2023). We also launched our AAAR UIUC (@aaaruiuc) • Instagram photos and videos account the same day!

The next day, on May 31, our alumnus Dr. Joseph Puthussery, now a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Washington University in St Louis, gave a Zoom talk at UC Davis under the title of "Real-time Detection of SARS-CoV-2 in the Air."

Our student chapter hosted the June AAAR AS&T Lecture Series on June 12. Alejandro Keller, a Research Scientist at the University of Applied Science Northwestern Switzerland gave a zoom talk titled "The Organic Coating Unit, An All-In-One System for Reproducible Generation of Secondary Organic Matter Aerosol." The seminar recording can be found here: The Organic Coating Unit, an All-In-One System for Reproducible Generation of Secondary Organic... - YouTube.

At the June Monthly Journal Club on June 16, Tahsina Alam hosted a session on Air pollution: A systematic review of its psychological, economic, and social effects - ScienceDirect. The members discussed the oft-neglected effects of air pollution on mental health.

Last week of June, Illinois felt the impact of Canadian Wildfire smoke in their air quality. Chapter members Manho Park and P. S. Ganesh Subramanian took the initiative to measure the outdoor and indoor air quality of Newmark Civil Engineering Laboratory on June 27. The indoor air quality was concerning for the

students and staff working there without air purifiers. C-R box filters were found to be effective in reducing the indoor air pollution. How to Build a Corsi-Rosenthal Box - YouTube
