Hello AAAR@UIUC community! Let's review our activities from Summer and Fall 2024.
June Journal Club
On June 28, we hosted an online Journal Club focusing on 'Air Pollution in Developing Countries: Asia.' This was the second part of our series on Air Pollution in Developing Countries, following Africa.
During this hour-long session, we began with a general discussion on long-term historical trends in air pollutant emissions in Asia, specifically the Regional Emission Inventory in Asia (REAS) version 3 (https:// acp.copernicus.org/articles/20/12761/2020/). We then moved on to a more detailed discussion about the impacts of the nationwide lockdown due to the COVID-19 outbreak on air quality in Bangladesh, exploring a spatiotemporal analysis (https:// link.springer.com/article/10.1007/ s11869-020-00940-5).

AAAR Fall Olympics
On September 6, AAAR@UIUC hosted a Fall Olympics event to kick off the semester with some fun. Ten participants were split into "EES" and "non-EES" teams, competing in activities such as a scavenger hunt, trivia, and minute-to-win-it challenges. The EES team took home the gold.
AAAR x IWRA x 4FGSAC Curtis Apple Orchard and Pumpkin Patch Trip
On October 6, AAAR@UIUC teamed up with the UIUC chapter of the International Water Resources Association (IWRA) and the 4th Floor Graduate Student Advisory Council ($FGSAC) for the Newmark Civil Engineering Laboratory to visit Curtis Apple Orchard and Pumpkin Patch. We enjoyed picking apples, sipping apple cider vinegar, and petting the orchard cat!

AAAR@UIUC presents Career Panel: Internships and Fellowships during Graduate Studies
This semester on October 18, AAAR@UIUC hosted a career panel focused on internships and fellowships during graduate studies, featuring four accomplished panelists from diverse backgrounds. Lin Guo shared insights from his data science and machine learning internships at Deepgram and Visa Research, while Sue Lin discussed her experiences in marketing and sustainability, including her role in developing a new sustainability program at UIUC. Tessa Clarizio and Erin Emme, both Environmental Engineering PhD candidates, provided perspectives on research fellowships, including Tessa’s involvement in the Policy & Research Legislative Fellows Program and Erin’s participation in NSF NCAR internships. Panelists offered valuable advice on securing competitive opportunities, balancing research with internships, and leveraging experiences for future career growth. The event concluded with an engaging Q&A session, where attendees received tailored guidance on pursuing academic and industry opportunities beyond graduate school.
November Journal Club
On November 1, AAAR@UIUC hosted a journal club focusing on one of the most pressing issues in air quality research today—'Wildfire'! We examined the following two significant papers:
1. “Air Quality and Health Impacts of the 2020 Wildfires in California”
“Smoke-weather Interaction Affects Extreme Wildfires in Diverse Coastal Regions”
Following this, the school and AAAR@UIUC entered a winter hibernation until Spring 2025!
